A sacred space for healing and growth

What is a sacred space

A sacred space is where you feel safe, protected, and accepted. It is a refuge from worries and distractions, a place to listen, rest and reflect. Ultimately, it is your sanctuary for complete peace and contentment, whether meditating, listening to music, birdsong or the gentle breeze.

A sacred space can be anywhere, from a small corner of your home, to a peaceful area of your garden, or another place such as a park bench, woodland or beside some water. It is a space that offers a refuge to cultivate a peaceful, healing transition to, or from, pressing responsibilities, challenging circumstances or day-to-day life; where ‘stillness’ allows you to release control, shed the layers of stress, fear, and uncertainty that surround you, let your guard down, express your true emotions without judgement, regain power and control, and lift your spirit.

Why do you need a sacred space?

What makes your space sacred is down to you and your needs. Small or large, minimal or grand, it will be a space to rest, recharge, grieve, heal, think, experience special moments, receive guidance, enhance and support healing, and much more.

If you’re a seeker and don’t yet have a sacred space, you are missing a piece of the puzzle to living with peace, intention and meaning. So, are you inspired to create your own sacred space? Let’s look at how to do it. Have some fun in the process and let the space evolve.

Creating a sacred space

We all know that interior design can affect mood and well-being. While every room in your home should feel special and comfortable, your sacred space should be where you can leave behind the chaos and go inward to heal and restore the mind, body, and spirit. You can create a fantastic space in the smallest home and on the tiniest budget.

Creating your sacred space is about dedicating a specific area for rejuvenation; an altar, a yoga mat in a peaceful area of your home, an entire room, or a tranquil spot outside.

Before you start, think about places you have felt safe and at peace. What was around you in those places? Try to recreate that in your sacred space. Consider including a bookcase with inspirational books, cushions, plants, and an altar (this could be on top of the bookcase). The space you create should offer somewhere you can get away from it all, meditate, be mindful, breathe, pray, practice yoga, draw, write, read, or just sit and reflect; you choose. Somewhere you will spend time to feel loved and restored, and practice self-love.

Here are a few things to consider:

  1. The space ~ find a space indoors or outdoors free of distraction, where you feel comfortable and at ease. It doesn’t need to be elaborate or a whole room. It can be a comfy chair in a corner with a small side table, floor space, or outside on a terrace or in the woods.
  2. Clear the clutter ~ you do not want to move things when you need the space. Include positive and meaningful items that bring joy or calm to the space.
  3. Select a space with lots of natural light to boost wellness.
  4. Create an altar space, any flat surface, such as a table or a shelf. Add special objects, such as a candle or an oil burner, crystals, stones, figurines, photos of loved ones or your deity, inspirational quotes, and natural items. Make it beautiful. Add fresh flowers. Let it evolve and change it now and then.
  5. Acknowledge, consider and connect with your senses for calm, comfort, and peace ~
  • For sight, incorporate beauty in your space, whether from your favourite, meaningful items or a view of nature.
  • For touch, ensure the space is comfortable by adding seating, cushions, a cosy throw or shawl to wrap yourself in, and tactile objects, such as polished stones.
  • For hearing/sound, play tranquil, relaxing music in your space, or use a bell, singing bowl or windchimes, to help you meditate. Or if your space is outside, focus on bird song, the sound of water or wind in the trees.
  • For smell, incorporate your favourite fragrances by burning incense or a scented candle, diffusing essential oils, or adding fragrant plants to your space.
  • For taste, have a delicious drink and a tasty snack.
  1. Set your boundaries ~ be clear to everyone how important the space is for you, and what is permissible in your space (for example, no interruptions.)
  2. Set your intention for the space and decide what you will use it for, whether reading, prayer, rituals, meditation, journaling, relaxation, yoga or all these things.
  3. Then just let the magic happen! This is now your sanctuary where you can step into your inner world for whatever you need and desire, be it clarity, calm, guidance, and more.

Once you have created your sacred space, if it is permanent, try to keep it clutter-free and ready for you. Whether just sitting for a few moments or longer, you want candles ready to light, your journal ready to be written, and the space prepared.

How your sacred space should make you feel

Your sacred space should be a haven of serenity curated with items that soothe your soul. Stresses and fears should be released in the quiet, allowing your mind to settle and for you to breathe. It should bring you joy, help you feel like your true self, support you when needed, and help your world feel right again.

A simple altar can be created for meditation, manifestation, or honouring loved ones. The intentional acts of lighting a candle or placing a cherished object on your altar, can shift the energy in your home.

Remember to cleanse and refresh your sacred space so it continues to support you. Let the space evolve; remove items when they lose meaning for you, and add new ones as your spiritual needs change and grow.

Make a commitment

Once you have created your sacred space, it is important to commit to it. Whether it’s 2 or 20 minutes, your practice should fill that time and be consistent. Yes, commit to the same amount of time every day. Retreat to this sacred space when you need; you’ll become calmer, clearer and happier.

Find your sacred space

Please create a sacred space. Find somewhere, a quiet room, a small altar or a special shelf, or a favourite outside space, that can help you feel grounded, supported, and connected with yourself. Get creative, personalise it, make it a space you want to spend time in and take care of yourself.

The sacred space you create will be a refuge amid life’s challenges, a reminder that even in difficult times, there is light. It should support and nurture your soul and bring peace, intention, healing and more. Oh, and please remember to set those boundaries!

If you have your sacred space in your home and find that you are moving, ensure you can create another space in your next home.
