Our minds are often pulled away from the only place life is truly lived: the present moment. We find ourselves worrying about the future, replaying the past, or chasing the next milestone that we think will bring happiness. How often have you finished a meal only to realise that you haven’t tasted a single morsel because your mind was elsewhere? Or had to re-read the same page of a book because your busy mind was on another page entirely? Life in general, and anxiety, depression, or stress in particular, can make you feel out of control and disconnected. But being in the present moment can offer a sense of clarity, calm, hope and joy; these feelings aren’t to be found ‘out there’; they live here, now, in the simple and sacred moments we too easily overlook.
Why the Present Moment Matters
The present moment is where your soul feels most at home. When you are fully present, you’re no longer tangled in ‘what-ifs’ or ‘should-haves’; you’re open to life as it is unfolding.
The present moment offers something the past and future cannot: the chance to simply be. To pause, take a breath, and notice. Being present doesn’t mean ignoring responsibilities or pretending current challenges and struggles don’t exist. Instead, it’s about creating some space to notice what is, to breathe into it, and to receive the joy and wisdom available and find a small sense of calm, clarity, or relief.
I find it remarkable to think that until recently, meditation was considered a bit ‘left-field’, and it pleases me that today mindfulness, which focuses attention on the present moment, is now being embraced.
Practices for Finding Joy in the Now
Here are a few soulful ways to anchor yourself in the present:
- Mindful breathing: A few deep, conscious breaths can bring you back from the noise of your mind to the calm of your body.
- Gratitude in real time: Pause and notice three things, however small, that bring you a sense of comfort or joy in this moment. This mindfulness helps us appreciate good and positive things in the moment before they are gone.
- Connect with nature: Spend time outside. Feel the sun, listen to birdsong, or watch the rhythm of the tide. Nature has a way of grounding us in the present.
- Single-tasking: Instead of juggling everything at once, give your full attention to one task at a time, whether it’s sipping tea, washing up, walking, or having a conversation. Use your senses (touch, sight, hearing, smell) to fully focus on the task at hand.
- Take a break from the screen: Notifications from our devices pull us out of the present. Try taking a break from your screen; turn off the notifications, and create space to connect more deeply with yourself and your surroundings without any distractions.
- Release perfection: Joy comes more easily when we stop waiting for the ‘perfect’ moment and, instead, embrace the perfectly imperfect one we’re already in.
Benefits of Being Present
While finding moments where you can be in the present won’t solve everything, it can make life feel more manageable. Practising mindfulness meditation regularly can help you to let go of overwhelming thoughts and calm your mind and your life. Here’s how it can help:
- Easing emotional overwhelm: Even a short pause can help create space between you and your emotions, making them feel less overwhelming.
- Reducing anxiety: When mindful and fully engaged in the present moment, you can embrace your anxious thoughts and feelings without becoming overwhelmed by them. Being in the present can act like an anchor, keeping your mind from worries and fear. Observe your thoughts and feelings and acknowledge that it’s OK to experience anxiety without self-criticism.
- Strengthening relationships: When you’re truly present with others, your connections will be deeper and you will feel less alone.
- Finding small joys: Noticing the positives can be a powerful antidote to anxiety, stress and depression.
