What are you ready to let go of?

Finding freedom, faith and purpose in the art of release

As October arrives, nature offers us a beautiful lesson in the art of release. Trees don’t cling desperately to their leaves as the season changes; they simply let them fall. There is no resistance, no fear about what comes next, just a quiet trust that this is part of the natural rhythm of life. Perhaps we could learn something from the trees. Sometimes, letting go is exactly what our soul needs.

What is the art of release?

The art of release refers to practices which help individuals let go of physical or mental constraints to improve wellbeing, performance, and alignments with their potential or purpose.

Why is letting go so difficult?

We can sometimes hold onto many things: old hurts, regrets, guilt, fear, expectations, relationships, habits, the need to control everything, and even versions of ourselves that we have outgrown.

We may hold these things because they feel familiar; even when they’re no longer good for us, releasing can feel frightening. We may wonder:
“Who will I be without this?”
“What happens if I let go?”
“What if I make the wrong decision?”

But holding on to something simply because it is familiar doesn’t mean it is where we should remain. There comes a time when we need to ask ourselves whether what we’re carrying may be holding us back.

Letting go doesn’t mean giving up

There is an important difference between giving up and letting go.

Giving up can come from hopelessness.

Letting go can come from faith.

When we let go, we’re not necessarily saying something didn’t matter. We are acknowledging that its season in our lives has come to an end. We can honour what has been without carrying it into what comes next.

Sometimes letting go is an act of courage. Sometimes it is an act of self-love. And sometimes it is an act of faith.

Trusting God with what we cannot control

Control is one of the hardest things for us to release. We want to know what is going to happen. We want certainty. We want to understand why things have happened and where our next step will take us. But faith asks us to trust even when we cannot see the whole picture.

Proverbs 3:5-6 reminds us:
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding.”

I think this is a beautiful invitation. We don’t have to understand everything. We don’t have to know exactly how the story will unfold. We can place our fears, worries and uncertainty into God’s hands and trust that He is with us as we move forward.

Letting go through faith fosters freedom and purpose by surrendering control, trusting divine guidance, and embracing acceptance, allowing us to flourish and find peace and joy.

What could you release?

So, is it time to gently consider what you’re carrying? Is there an old belief about yourself that is no longer true? Perhaps you have spent years believing you’re not good enough, not capable enough, or somehow not deserving of happiness. Maybe you’re carrying guilt about something that happened in the past. Perhaps you’re holding onto someone else’s expectations of who you should be. Maybe you’re constantly putting everyone else first and have forgotten that your own needs matter too. Or perhaps you are trying desperately to control a situation that is simply beyond your control.

You don’t have to release everything at once. Start with one thing. Ask yourself: “Is this helping me become the person God created me to be?” If the answer is no, then it may be time to let it go.

Making space for your Soul

When we release something that has been weighing us down, we create space: space for peace, joy, creativity, and/or healing; space to hear our intuition; to reconnect with God; and space to discover our soul purpose.

Sometimes we struggle to hear our purpose because our inner world is simply too crowded. We are so busy carrying yesterday that we have no room for tomorrow. Letting go doesn’t guarantee the path ahead will be easy, but it can make us lighter as we walk it.

Your purpose may change as you grow

Our soul purpose isn’t necessarily a single destination that we discover once and then follow forever.

Life changes. We change. Our circumstances change.

Our gifts may develop. Our priorities may shift. New opportunities may appear. Different seasons may call different things from us. Perhaps something that felt like your purpose ten years ago no longer feels right today. That doesn’t mean you have failed. It may simply mean you have grown. God can use every season of our lives, even the difficult ones, to shape us, teach us and prepare us for what comes next. Sometimes we need to release an old chapter before we can recognise the new one unfolding.

Learning from the autumn leaves

I love the way autumn reminds us that letting go can be beautiful. Look at the leaves. They change colour, become golden and vibrant, and then eventually fall. They don’t see falling as an ending. They become part of the earth, nourishing what will grow in the future.

Perhaps the things we release can do something similar. Our experiences, challenges and lessons don’t have to be wasted. They can become part of who we are and help us grow in wisdom, compassion and understanding. What you have been through can become part of the gift you offer others.

Your story can have purpose. Your scars can become places of compassion. Your lessons can become wisdom. Your difficult seasons can prepare you to walk alongside someone else through theirs.

A gentle exercise in letting go

If you’re ready to explore what you might release, find a quiet place and take a few moments to breathe.

You could write down three things you are currently carrying that feel heavy. Perhaps a fear. A regret. An expectation. A relationship. A habit. A worry. Then, beside each one, ask:
“Does this still serve me?”
“What would happen if I released it?”
“What could I make space for instead?”
And finally: “Can I place this in God’s hands and trust Him with what comes next?”

You don’t need to have all the answers. You simply need to begin.

What will you make space for?

Letting go is only part of the journey. Once we release something, we can consider what we want to welcome into its place: more peace, more joy, more time in nature, deeper faith, better boundaries, greater self-care, a renewed sense of purpose, a life that feels more authentic and aligned with who you truly are.

Your soul deserves space to breathe; sometimes creating that space begins with one brave decision to let something go.

My quick tips

My quick tips for finding freedom, faith and purpose through the art of release are to embrace forgiveness, gratitude, and trust in a higher plan while practising acceptance, self-reflection, and connection with nature.

A gentle invitation

If you’re at a point in your life where you know something needs to change but you’re not sure what or how, you don’t have to work it out alone.

Through Soul Purpose Mentoring, I offer a safe, supportive and compassionate space where we can explore what is holding you back, reconnect with your faith, rediscover your gifts and begin to uncover the path that feels right for you.

Through Wellbeing Coaching, I can support you in putting yourself back on your own list, particularly if you’re navigating a significant transition or simply feeling that your energy and get-up-and-go have disappeared.

Sometimes the first step towards finding your purpose isn’t discovering something new. Sometimes it’s simply letting go of what is no longer yours to carry.

🍂 As the leaves fall, perhaps ask yourself: What am I ready to release this autumn? And what might God be inviting me to make space for? Whatever your answer, be gentle with yourself. You are still becoming. And there is beauty in every season.

If this blog has resonated with you, I’d love to hear from you. Together, let’s discover what you may be ready to let go of and help you find freedom, faith and purpose in the art of release.
