The importance of boundaries (for your well-being)

Nov 8, 2024

Boundaries are good for YOU; they benefit you and your relationships. Healthy boundaries help you indicate what is and is not acceptable to you, offer control over your emotional and physical space and time, and support your mental health, mood and well-being. They are important in your personal and professional life, and learning how to set and maintain boundaries will help you develop independence and engage in healthy, positive connections with others.

Whether you’re a people pleaser or struggle with prioritising your needs, I hope this blog will give you valuable insights into boundaries and the benefits of setting them to prioritise your well-being.

What are boundaries?

Simply speaking, boundaries are limits that you set to indicate what behaviour is acceptable (and unacceptable) for your body, emotions, time, and belongings. Such boundaries state what you feel comfortable with, your needs, and what you don’t feel comfortable with. These boundaries can take many forms, including saying no to unreasonable demands, limiting time spent with the wrong people, or setting aside time for self-care. Essentially, boundaries help you create a healthy balance between your personal needs and the demands of life.

Types of boundaries

There are various types of boundaries: emotional, material, intellectual, verbal, psychological, physical, relationship, ethical, spiritual, time, financial, and moral.

A physical boundary could be, do not touch me; an emotional boundary, do not lie to me; and a boundary based on time or space could involve a rule such as when I do X, please respect my time and understand I will not be able to speak until completed.

Why are boundaries needed?

There are various reasons why you need to put boundaries in place. Here are some examples:

  1. To protect your emotional space.
  2. To protect your physical space.
  3. To separate your interests, thoughts and feelings from those of others.
  4. To help you form and maintain healthy relationships with a balance of independence and interdependence.
  5. To ensure you don’t feel responsible for the happiness of other people.
  6. To protect your time.
  7. To give you a strong sense of identity.
  8. To place your needs on a par with others.
  9. To prevent conflict.
  10. To develop independence.

Whether it’s a personal or professional relationship, boundaries protect you and help to ensure respect for your identity, well-being, and care. These boundaries when communicated clearly, let others know what is acceptable to you and form the foundation of a healthy relationship. They help you feel safe and respected, avoid stress and anxiety, as well as preventing financial and emotional burdens, and the avoidance of burnout as a result of mental health challenges from not setting boundaries.

Before you start…

Before setting your boundaries, it is important to:

  1. recognise that you are a worthwhile person and deserve respect,
  2. acknowledge your current boundaries,
  3. recognise your needs and what boundaries you would like to set, and
  4. learn to say ‘no’.

Once you have considered the above, you will be able to set and communicate your boundaries respectfully and respect others’ boundaries.

Tips to create healthy boundaries

Here are a few tips to help you establish healthy boundaries:

  1. Identify your needs and priorities.
  2. Communicate clearly and assertively.
  3. Learn to say ‘no’ when required.
  4. Develop a healthy respect for yourself and others should treat you with respect.
  5. Avoid people and situations that drain your energy.
  6. Don’t try to fix other people.
  7. Prioritise self-care.
  8. Be in control of your choices and remember you can change your mind or direction at any time.

So, as you can see, personal and professional boundaries are limits you need to put in place to keep you and your relationships healthy. With clear, defined boundaries, your needs and those of others will prevent emotional exhaustion and mental health challenges. Remember, setting boundaries is not selfish, but a necessary step to maintaining a healthy and fulfilling life.
