The ‘value’ of values

So what do I mean by the ‘value’ of values? No, I am not talking about money here!! This has nothing to do with material or monetary worth.

Let’s first look at what ‘value’ means as it can have many different meanings…

  • You can value a quality, an attitude or a way of doing something where the value is in its importance or usefulness to you.
  • You can value someone where you value the person and appreciate them for who they are. In this situation, you are valuing their moral principles and beliefs.
  • You can value principles or standards of behaviour where you put a value on what is important in life.

It can be helpful to view your values as ‘the things that are most important to YOU’. The things that motivate you and guide your decisions, the reason you get out of bed in the morning and do what you do. When you consider this you will realise that you may have many, many values, they may be different in different areas of your life and they may change throughout life as your priorities change. For example, when you are young and starting a career your job priorities/values may well be monetary and status, while later in life if you have a family you are likely to put a higher value on ‘family time’.

So what do you value in life? What do you believe is important in the way you live and work? These might seem like simple questions but they need careful thought and deliberation. Defining and understanding your values should help you determine your true path in life… your soul’s purpose… personal and professional.

Identifying and understanding your values can be quite a challenge but it is incredibly important. Values reflect who you are and who you desire to be. Try and think about this (over a cuppa) and see what resonates with you … this may help you along:

Your values can be used to help in any decision-making process as they will direct you to make the right choices. These values will help you grow and develop as a person and living in line with your values will have a direct impact on how you feel about yourself. This is the ‘value’ of valuesHopefully, this will also clarify how the ‘value’ of your values impacts your soul’s purpose.

When you live a life aligned with your values, you are likely to be happier, more confident and more fulfilled. When there’s a mismatch, you are likely to be less happy and more stressed. So what are you waiting for? Start writing your list so that you can realise the ‘value’ of your values. Good luck.
